ENSO Summer El-Nino Asia 2024.
ENSO Non El-Nino Summer Asia 2024.
In the recent 2024 El-Nino summer that affected Asia from April to March many areas of south east asia underwent a extreme heatwave that the mercury soared in many areas of south east asia. This caused Stifling conditions in Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Phillipinnes.
Schools reduced day hours, workers reduced there work outside and the regions of south east asia underwent weeks under hot and dry conditions. People in the area undertook a plethora of ways to combat the Asian heat.
The average surface temperatures recorded in south east asia where between 40 degrees celsius to a max of 56 degrees celsius in the Phillipinnes. Being a Asian El-Nino year at this time frame ENSO affects incumbent weather.
To explain this particular Asian summer pattern we will first look at a common feature of the asian climate the Horse latitudes also known as the Calms of cancer. In a normal summer the horse latitudes are placed in there normal pattern being the northern extent is placed at around 30 degrees north of the equator. In this position weather in this band will be subsiding air and fine dry weather in this latitudinal band that extends across asia. This area is also known as the northern sub tropical high system.
In a El-Nino northern summer the sub-tropical high pressure system becomes displaced south and also with this the entire air column system known as the subsiding Hadley Cells moves south also (The cause of the Sub Tropical High system). When this happens a large continent and sea area can be placed for weeks into a ENSO based Extreme Weather system that is indicative of the El-Nino pattern.
This first Asian summer of 2024 was no exception and across the south east Asia area the regions sweltered under the influence of a late El-Nino. Therefore it is important once again to have summer preparedness in such occasions. The influence of the El-Nino can also be found in the low broad ridge over the south east Asia area via the sub tropical jet.
