24–29 July 2026
A six-day regional guide to the strengthening southwest monsoon, monsoon-trough convection, heavy rain, thunderstorms, terrain enhancement and marine weather across Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, western Malaysia and adjoining Indonesian waters.
24–29 July Indochina Convection Story
Indochina has entered a more active convective period on 24 July 2026 as southwest monsoon flow transports increasingly deep moisture from the eastern Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea toward mainland Southeast Asia.
Thailand's operational forecast places a low-pressure area over upper Vietnam on 24 July while a moderate-to-strengthening southwest monsoon extends across the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
The larger increase occurs during 26–30 July, when the monsoon trough is forecast to become established from Myanmar through Laos into upper Vietnam. At the same time, southwest flow strengthens across the Andaman Sea and Thailand.
This combination favours a broad corridor of recurring showers and thunderstorms from western Myanmar through northern and eastern Thailand, Laos and northern Vietnam, with particularly strong rainfall potential along windward terrain and the western Andaman-facing coast.
Main Convection Triggers
Southwest monsoon
Moist air from the equatorial Indian Ocean and Andaman Sea is transported northeastward toward Myanmar, Thailand and mainland Indochina.
Monsoon trough
Low-level winds converge along the Myanmar–Laos–Vietnam corridor, helping initiate repeated deep thunderstorms.
Terrain lifting
Mountain ranges along western Myanmar, northern Thailand, Laos and Vietnam force humid monsoon air upward and can greatly amplify rainfall.
Daytime CAPE
Strong daytime heating between rain periods can quickly restore instability and produce vigorous afternoon thunderstorms.
Andaman inflow
Increasing southwesterly flow feeds western Thailand and Myanmar directly from a warm marine moisture source.
Coastal convergence
Sea breezes interact with monsoon flow around the Malay Peninsula, Gulf of Thailand, southern Vietnam and Cambodia.
Outflow boundaries
Earlier thunderstorms produce cool outflows that can generate new cells several tens of kilometres away from the first storm.
Night-time rainfall
Convection over the Andaman Sea and Gulf can persist overnight and move inland during the morning before afternoon redevelopment.
Myanmar & Eastern Andaman Corridor
Myanmar occupies the upstream side of the strengthening southwest monsoon and becomes increasingly important as the monsoon trough becomes established during 26–29 July.
Moist southwesterly flow striking the Arakan/Rakhine coastal ranges and mountainous interior favours strong orographic enhancement.
Northern and eastern Myanmar also lie close to the evolving monsoon-trough axis, increasing the potential for widespread afternoon, evening and overnight convection.
Main hazards: heavy rainfall, local flash flooding, landslides, lightning and strong thunderstorm gusts.

Windward mountain districts and locations where repeated cells move across the same catchment.
Thailand
Thailand is one of the highest-confidence active areas in the 24–29 July period.
On 24 July the Thai Meteorological Department places a low-pressure area over upper Vietnam while moderate southwest monsoon flow prevails across the Andaman Sea, Thailand and Gulf of Thailand.
Scattered to widespread thunderstorms are therefore already occurring, with isolated heavy rain in the upper country and along the southwest coast.

Laos & Vietnam
Laos
Laos becomes increasingly important after 25 July as the monsoon trough establishes itself across the country.
Mountainous terrain strongly enhances rainfall when deep southwest moisture intersects the trough.
Northern, central and eastern mountain catchments are particularly susceptible to localized flash flooding where thunderstorms repeat.
Afternoon initiation over mountains may organise into evening or overnight thunderstorm clusters.
Vietnam
On 24 July, Vietnam's national forecasting centre reports scattered showers and thunderstorms over both northern and southern Gulf of Tonkin waters.
Southern Vietnamese waters from the Lam Dong/Ca Mau sector are experiencing southwest winds with thunderstorms and rougher conditions.
Upper Vietnam becomes increasingly important during 26–29 July as the monsoon trough extends eastward from Myanmar and Laos.
Northern Vietnam therefore has increasing heavy-rain potential, while southern Vietnam remains exposed to recurring southwest monsoon thunderstorms.
Vietnam Regional Contrast
Cambodia & Lower Mekong
Cambodia lies south of the strongest monsoon-trough axis but remains embedded within moist southwest monsoon flow.
The most active convective regime generally favours western, southwestern and northern Cambodia, where southwest flow encounters terrain and moisture convergence.
Phnom Penh and the central lowlands remain susceptible to intense but spatially uneven afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
Southern and coastal Cambodia may experience more persistent monsoon cloud and rainfall where moist flow arrives from the Gulf of Thailand.
Malaysia & Malacca Strait
Malaysia lies south of the main mainland monsoon-trough axis, but convection is active within the southwest monsoon flow, particularly along the Malacca Strait and western side of the peninsula.
On the morning of 24 July, METMalaysia issued thunderstorm warnings for waters including Perlis/Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka , together with parts of Sarawak and western Sabah.
NW Peninsula
Perlis, Kedah and Penang retain a recurring thunderstorm signal through the outlook period.
Morning coastal storms may be followed by inland afternoon redevelopment.
Malacca Strait
Convergence between Sumatran outflows, nocturnal offshore storms and monsoon winds can support morning thunderstorms along the western peninsula.
Sabah & Sarawak
Scattered thunderstorms remain possible throughout the period, particularly over interior terrain and western coastal waters.
Indonesia: Sumatra & Adjacent Equatorial Waters
Indonesia is south of the main Indochina monsoon trough, but Sumatra is an important upstream moisture and convection source for the Malacca Strait and western Malay Peninsula.
BMKG has active severe-weather nowcasts on 24 July, including moderate-to-heavy rainfall capable of producing lightning and strong winds in parts of Indonesia.
Northern Sumatra deserves particular attention because nocturnal convection developing over the island or adjacent waters can move into the Malacca Strait and influence western Malaysia.
Farther south across Java, Bali and portions of southern Indonesia, July remains seasonally drier, so convective coverage is not expected to be as consistently extensive as the Indochina monsoon corridor.
Northern Sumatra
Locally active thunderstorms and strong short-duration rainfall.
Malacca-facing coast
Night and early-morning thunderstorm complexes can propagate eastward toward Malaysian waters.
Java / Bali
Generally lower organised-convection potential in the July dry season, although isolated local thunderstorms remain possible.
Major Southwest-Monsoon Uplift
The most important change in the forecast occurs from 26 July onward.
TMD expects the monsoon trough to lie across Myanmar, Laos and upper Vietnam while the southwest monsoon strengthens over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and Gulf of Thailand.
This produces a classic active-monsoon configuration: deep maritime moisture enters from the southwest while the continental trough supplies convergence and broad upward motion.
Mountain ranges then strongly enhance vertical motion, while daytime heating and thunderstorm outflows create smaller-scale convective maxima.
